"We wish to find the truth, no matter where it lies. But to find the Truth we need imagination and
skepticism both. We will not be affraid to speculate, but we will be careful to distinguish speculation from fact". Carl Sagan

Whenever it arises a new observatory pronounces the restlessness to identify it and to associate it with a personage of Astronomy that has caused an important advance in the field.
Thus, for example, the Observatory of 2.11 ms of the Mountain range  'La Mariquita', takes the name of the astronomer Guillermo Haro who made important discoveries and impelled astronomy in Mexico.

In the case of the Observatory at 'Cerro Azul', originally known by its abbreviations OCA, we
decided to named it after an astronomer that extending borders not only by its contributions to Astronomy, but by his promotion on the education, the environment and its honest political position at the time of the cold war.

Carl Sagan is a name, that since its famous series the Cosmos in the 1980's, spilled nonsingle
the knowledge and the scientific thought between the people, but was point of inspiration for
many in the scientific work and the intention to spread the knowledge.

From its beginning in 1990, the Astronomy Area of the CIF-US stand between its objectives of work and development the education and the spreading, but not as a complement, but at the same level of priority that the scientific research, observation and the creation of infrastructure.

We believe that to named the Observatory at 'Cerro Azul' after Carl Sagan, it is a right tribute and the reflection of our intention and interest of which this new scientific resource also has an important repercussion in creating an astronomical culture and a scientific perspective in the community.

In October of 1998, when we communicated with Ann Druyan, widow of Carl Sagan, she
responded to us accepting our intention and said:

"May the Carl Sagan Vacuum Solar-Stellar Telescope at 'Cerro Azul' be like its namesake: May it look unflinchingly at the wonder of nature and be a source of deepening understanding and joyful discoveries to all associated with it".
